A salary structure is an important component of an effective compensation program. It helps ensure that pay levels for roles and jobs are competitive externally and fair internally. A well-designed salary structure allows Human Resources to reward exceptional performance and control the base salary cost by providing a cap on the range paid for particular jobs at the same time.

Perceived imbalances or biases in how salaries are distributed could result in tension, misunderstanding, low morale, gossips and conflict in the workplace. To avoid salary disputes and resolve them, which could be costly and time-consuming, it is necessary for a company to have a sound salary structure that is transparent to employees.
